Absolute Truth

The principle of democracy is a recognition of the sovereign, inalienable rights of man as a gift from God, the Source of law.
— Bishop Fulton Sheen

Truth is a prerequisite for love.

The Catholic Church teaches that absolute truth exists and is a prerequisite for living in harmony and justice

  • Truth is a prerequisite for justice. Truth is a part of justice, and justice cannot function without truth.

  • Truth is a prerequisite for love and trust. Truth is necessary for people to live together in harmony and trust each other.

  • The Catholic Church has the fullness of divine Revelation. The Catholic Church is the only way to know the fullness of divine Revelation with certainty.

  • Truth is objective. Statements about the existence of God or the authority of the Catholic Church are objective truths.

  • Truth is hierarchical. There is a hierarchy of truths in Catholic doctrine, with some truths being more important than others.

  • Truth is a calling. Christians are called to live in the truth, and discovering and living the truth fulfills their dignity as persons.

Some basic truths of the Catholic Church include:

  • The mystery of God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit

  • The mystery of Christ, who was born of the Virgin Mary, suffered, died, and rose for salvation
